Le joli mois de mai! Part 1: May Day in France.

Bonjour! Today, a lesson for level A1 -actually for seasoned A1, or higher levels who want to review basics and learn about May first in France.

Le premier mai

Today's focus :

- May 1st in France

- conjugation of regular ER ending verbs

- "-tion" ending words

- "jour" vs "journée"

Le mois ... the month
Le premier mai ... May first
la fête du travail ... Labor Day
le début ... the beginning (think of the word début")
un jour férié ... a holiday;
une journée de travail ... a work day
note that there are two words for "day":
jour which is used more for dates
journée which is used to state a duration, the length of a day
"toute la journée" means "all day long"
whereas "tous les jours", literally "all the days", means "everyday"
une heure ... one hour / an hour
huit ... eight
vingt ... 20
le vingtième siècle (XX siècle) ... the twentieth century
les gens ... people
la fleur ... the flower
le muguet ... Lily of the valley
le loisir ... leasure, free time

le sommeil ... the sleep
le travail ... work
un travailleur (m.) une travailleuse (f.) ... a worker (general)

la tradition ... tradition
traditionnel (m.) traditionnelle (f.) ... traditional
traditionnellement ... traditionally
note that this word evolves just like in English :
la tradition (the noun) becomes "traditionnel / traditionnelle" (traditional - the adjective) which then becomes "traditionnellement" (traditionally - the adverb).
une manifestation ... a demonstration, a march
>>> - words ending in "tion" are always feminine,
- the"shun"-phonetics in English is pronounced "SSion" in French.
joli (m.) / jolie (f.) ... pretty
beaucoup ... many, a lot of


- verbes:
- offrir ... to offer, to give (a gift)
j'offre, tu offres, il/elle/on offre
nous offrons, vous offrez, ils offrent
- travailler ... to work
je travaille, tu travailles, il/elle/on travaille
nous travaillons, vous travaillez, ils/elles travaillent
- défiler ... to march
je défile, tu défiles, il/elle/on défile
nous défilons, vous défilez, ils/elles défilent 
>>> travailler and défiler are regular -er ending verb. To conjugate them, substitute the ER ending with the conjugated endings:
je... E, tu ... ES, il / elle / on ...E
nous ... ONS, vous ... EZ, ils/elles ...ENT
note that the endings in E, ES and ENT are silent!
