Conjugaison: RE-ending verbs (audio)

REEndingVerbsRegular by sandrinedeparis

©Robert Doisneau
En français, il est important de bien connaître les conjugaisons des verbes.  In French, it is important to know well the verb conjugations.

Cela demande souvent un effort de mémorisation -et un peu de pratique, mais ça vaut vraiment la peine. This often requires an effort of memorization -and a bit of practice, but it is well worth the effort.

Aujourd'hui, nous conjugons des verbes dont l'infinitif se termine en "RE".
Today, we conjugate verbs whose infinitive ends in "RE".

RE-ending verbs : Les verbes réguliers - The regular verbs.
→ drop the RE and replace with s* / s* / - / ons / ez / ent*
(*silent)
Attendre (to wait / to wait for)
- j'attends, tu attends, il / elle attend (all pronounced "ah-tãh")
- nous attendons, vous attendez, ils /elles attendent ("ent" ending is silent)

-->  singulier: D is silent!
--> pluriel: D is audible !

NB: "Attendre" does not mean "to attend", it means "to wait"

Entendre (to hear)
- j'entends, tu entends, il / elle entend
- nous entendons, vous entendez, ils / elles entendent
Ils vendent des oranges

Répondre (to answer, to respond)
- je réponds, tu réponds, il / elle répond
- nous répondons, vous répondez, ils / elles répondent

Vendre (to sell)
- je vends, tu vends, il / elle vend
- nous vendons, vous vendez, ils / elles vendent

Descendre (to go down, to descend)
- je descends, tu descends, il / elle descend
- nous descendons, vous descendez, ils / elles descendent

Exercice : conjuguez le verbe et traduisez la phrase (and translate the sentence)
(and find the correction by clicking on a link below)
1- Nous _______________ à la question. (respond)
2- Vous _______________ l'escalator. (go down)
3- Je _________________ des fruits et des légumes (sell)
4- Tu n'________________ pas la radio. (hear)
5- Elle  _______________ le bus. (wait for)
6- Ils _______________ de l'avion. (go down)
7- Je ne ________________ pas à votre question. (respond)
8- Vous _______________ la fin du film. (wait for)
9- Il  _______________ les voitures dans la rue. (hear)
10- Tu _______________ des oranges au marché. (sell)

Une image vaut mille mots.

mille mots
"Une image vaut mille mots" (an image is worth a thousand words), dit-on.

(When was the photo taken? At which era? At what time of the day?)
- Qui ? Y a-t-il des personnages? Combien? Qui sont-ils? Quel est leur âge, occupation, etc. Comment sont-ils habillés? Quels sont leurs accessoires? Quelles impressions vous donnent-ils?
- Quoi ?

grammaire : "tu", "te" or "toi"

Bonjour! Today, a lesson to review some basics. When do you use "tu", "te" and "toi"? (level A1, A2)

Paris, I love you

Aujourd'hui, nous parlons de "tu", "te" et "toi".
Listen to/read the lesson and practice with the exercises!

TU
Tu ("tüh") is the subject (i.e. it does the action, it is the subject of the verb)
Tu es française (You are French -"you" is the subject of "to be")
Tu ne sors pas le soir (You don't go out at night)
Tu te réveilles à 5 heures du matin (You wake up at 5 am -the verb)
>>> Tip: "Tu" like "Je" is the subject -each time you can replace "You" by "I" and not "me",  it means you should use "Tu"

 TE
Te ("tuh") is an object pronoun
Je te téléphone (I call you) "Je" is the subject of the verb and does the action, "Te" is the object of the verb, the action is done to "te"
Je t'aime = te becomes t' before a vowel
Ils te disent bonjour (they say hello to you)
Te is also used with reflexive verbs ("you do something to yourself") or pronominal verbs ("se" verbs)
Tu te regardes dans le miroir (you look at yourself in the mirror)
Tu te lèves   (verb: "se lever" -You get up)
>>> The object pronoun "te" is placed before the verb:
Elle ne te connaît pas She doesn't know you
- When there are two verbs, it is placed before the relevant verb (usually the second verb)
Je veux te téléphoner (te goes with "téléphoner" = I want to call you, it does not go with "want" ≠  I want you)
Ils vont t'inviter -They are going to invite you: this is the future, aller + verbe infinitif, the pronoun goes before the infinitive verb
Je vais te poser une question (I am going to ask you a question)

TOI
Toi ("twah") is the stressed pronoun.
Used at the end of a sentence, after a préposition (avec, de, pour, sans, etc. when you want to say: for you, with you, without you, next to you etc.)
Je travaille pour toi I work/am working for you

Elle voyage avec toi She travels/is traveling with you

Je suis assise à côté de toi I am sitting next to you

When the pronoun needs to be emphasized, or when you point at someone:
Je vais bien, et toi? (I'm well, how about you?)
Toi? Tu penses le contraire? You? You think the opposite?
Moi, je suis française et toi, tu es belge. Me, I am French and you, you are Belgian
Yourself/your own = toi-même
Tu fais la cuisine toi-même You do your own cooking = you cook yourself

NB: The imperative (= command) uses "-toi" too: Assieds-toi! = sit (yourself) down; Lève-toi! (get up-"raise yourself"), Regarde-toi! (look at yourself) -we'll see this another time...

Exercice:
1- fill in the blank with tu, te, t' ou toi
2- translate the sentence
3- go to the correction page to check your responses, find the translations and hear an audio recording of these sentences

Today's focus:
c'est (It is / This is)
Basic questions = What's this? Who is this? How is it?
+ some useful basic vocabulary

How do you translate "It is" or "It's" in French?
Very often, it's "C'est".
- However, it can also be "Il est" or "Elle est", which literally mean "he is" and "she is", because, if you remember: in French, things have a gender!

"C'est" (pronounced "say") is in fact 2 words "ce" (it) and "est" (is). "Ce" drops the "e" and becomes c' in front of a vowel.

>>> The negative of "c'est" is: "ce n'est pas" (it's not)

Today, we are going to play with "c'est" (and "ce n'est pas").
We are going to answer questions...

3 questions:
Qu'est-ce que c'est? (kess-kuh-seh) What's this? What is it? (Literally: "what is it that it is?")
Qui c'est? (Kee-seh) Who is it? Who is this? (when pointing to someone, answering the door bell or the phone)
Comment c'est? (Koh-mã-seh) How is it? How is this?

Vocabulaire:

un chat ("shah") a cat
un train a train

un voyage a trip

Subject pronouns (I, you, she, etc.)

Bonjour! Today, a lesson for level "R", or "Roots", i.e. debutants/beginners.
Not your level? What's my level? Click here.

Le magazine Elle. "Elle" means "She"

Today, we are learning some basics:
the subject pronouns in French (I, you, she, etc.)
Allons-y! Let's get started!

To listen to this lesson, click on the icon below:
SDPPronomsSujets by sandrinedeparis

Je is I
Tu is You
Il is He
Elle is She
On is One or We
Nous is We
Vous is You
Ils is They (masculine or mixed genders)
Elles is They (feminine)

Il, Elle = mean "he" or "she" but also "it"! In French, things and concepts are gendered! So you say "she" when you talk about a "guitare" (because it's a feminine noun) and "he" when you talk about a "piano" (because it's a masculine noun)

You: Tu or Vous?
The French language has 2 ways of saying "You"
Tu is singular, when addressing one person. It's also informal: this person is a friend, a family member, a child, a pet...
Vous is either plural ("y'all") when addressing several people or singular-formal/polite when addressing a person you don't know (at a store, at a café...) or a person with whom you are not on familiar terms (some teachers, neighbors, a boss,...)

How do I know?
Sometimes you are not sure if you should address someone with "Tu" or "Vous"...
1- Listen. When someone calls you "tu", you can generally use "tu" back.
2- When unsure, use "vous". People will let you know that you should call them "tu".

"Coucou!" "Hi there!" by Astérix* and Obélix.
They are good friends: they say "TU" to each other.

NB: The verb meaning "using TU" is "tutoyer". The verb meaning "using VOUS" is "vouvoyer".

We: Nous or On?
"Nous" used as a subject has become a little formal. Most people use "On" nowadays. "On" means "One" as in "One needs to eat a lot of veggies to be in good health", and, just like in English, it is conjugated at the 3rd person singular (= like "he" and "she").
example: "On aime Paris" means "We love Paris", and can be literally translated as "One loves Paris".

J'aime Paris! I love Paris!
Art by ©Altrered Gypsy

The apostrophy: Je or J'?
Je becomes J' when it precedes a verb starting with a vowel.
Let's take an example with words that are pretty similar in French and English:
- Je presse une orange (I press an orange)
"Je" remains "Je" because the initial of the verb "to press" is the consonant. "p".
but:
- J'aime les oranges (I love oranges)
"Je" becomes "J'" because the initial of the verb "Aimer" (to like/to love) is the vowel "a". (It flows better to drop the "e" of Je and replace it with an apostrophe.)
"J'aime" sounds like one word ("Jaime").

Phonetics:
- On: makes a nasal sound (Say "Oh" while expelling air by the nose), you don't pronounce the final "N".
- The "OU" of Nous and Vous is pronounced "oo".
- Nous, Vous, Ils, Elles: all end with a silent "S". You write it but don't pronounce it!
- Tu: the sound "U" this is not an "oo" sound. This is a sound that you make with your lips forward -what my friends call "french face"...  Think of the Olsen twins saying "Prune" to look more glamorous for the papparazzi. Or try say "ee" with your lips forward, as if you were smoking a thin cigarette...

Exercice 1: translate
Nous =
Ils = masc. or mixed genders
Elles = fem.
Vous = plural or polite
Je =

Exercice 2: translate
On = or "one"
Il =
Elle =
Tu = (singular, informal)
J' = before a verb starting with a vowel
